We believe in giving girls the know-how to help keep themselves safe while surfing the Internet. Here are some tips to share and discuss with your daughter to help her play it safe in cyberspace.
1. Talk to your daughter.
Be aware of the sites she likes to visit. Set aside some time to surf the Internet with her and discuss what kinds of information and entertainment you think are appropriate for her to seek out on the Web.
2. Help your daughter protect herself.
Tell your girl what is acceptable and unacceptable to share online. She should not post personal information, such as her name, address, telephone number, photos or the name of her school.
3. Keep passwords private.
Your daughter should only share her passwords with you. She should not give that information to friends and people she meets online.
4. Click carefully.
If she receives e-mails, links, photos or messages that make her feel uncomfortable or that ask for personal details, your girl should not click on them. Instead, establish a rule that she should come to you for help right away.
5. Be aware of online friends.
Let your daughter know that the people she meets online may not be who they say they are. If someone wants to meet her in person, she should tell you immediately. Also, give her the warning signs to look out for, such as if her online friend says to keep the meeting a secret.
6. Protect your computer.
Files or attachments that come from people your daughter doesn’t know or recognize should be deleted immediately. They could contain viruses that could damage your computer.
